Courses
The Business Education department offers a broad provision of courses to S1-6 pupils. The department prides itself on having high aspirations and positive relationships with our young people, which helps lead to positive levels of attainment for our pupils.
BGE – S1-3
S1
Our S1 course is split in to three sections – ICT, An Introduction to Business, and Computing. In the ICT section, pupils will be introduced to the basics of various Microsoft Office packages such as Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and PowerPoint. In An Introduction to Business, pupils will look at consumer needs and wants, goods and services, the power of social media and how to stay safe on the internet, exchange rates and marketing & advertising. Finally, our pupils will learn basic coding using software called Scratch in order to introduce them to Computing.
S2
With the foundations of ICT skills being taught in S1, our S2 course goes in to more depth of how a business can operate. Pupils will look at different types of organisations, methods of production, how a business can be financed, customer service, marketing & advertising, branding, entrepreneurs, business ethics, financial awareness and charity awareness. Each aspect of our S2 curriculum will continue to utilise the ICT skills that pupils learned in S1. At the end of the year, pupils complete a project that brings many of units together in a research and skills based task.
S3
In S3, pupils can select either Administration & IT or Business Management. This Broad General Education phase will help best prepare pupils for their National 5 courses in S4.
S4-6
We currently offer Administration & IT and Business Management at a range of levels to meet the ability of all learners. We are in the process of looking to expand the range of courses and NPA’s that we offer, but for our current options we are currently offering the following levels:
Further Information
Mr Lamb is the school coordinator for our work with the national charity, Career Ready, offering a programme to S5 pupils linking them directly with employers. Our work with Career Read aims to provide our young people with the opportunity to develop their employability skills and attitudes so they are ready to make the transition to the world of work. The programme involves attending masterclasses across the year in order to prepare them for a four week internship/work placement at a local organisation – these include Edrington, Santander, Diageo, Media Scotland and Leidos. Mr Lamb will keep S5 pupils updated with the recruitment process at the beginning of each session. If you are interested in being involved in S5, please let Mr Lamb know.
The department are involved in various extra-curricular activities. Mr Craig hosts Coding Club during lunchtime on a Monday and Miss Ralston hosts Film Club during lunchtime on a Tuesday. All three of the teachers in the department work with our Enterprise Club on a Wednesday lunch time, where a group of pupils take part in a Dragon’s Den programme which allows them to come up with their own product/service in relation to a social issue. Both Mr Lamb and Mr Craig are involved with the school football teams – any pupils interested in joining should speak to them if they wish to join. 5-a-side for S1/3 takes place on a Thursday after school in the gym hall.
Our department understands that pupil attendance at supported study is a key part in raising attainment for our young people. Supported study will be on offer following the October break – details of the dates/times of these will be communicated in due course.
You can keep up to date with our department on our Twitter feed @DHSBizEd. Our department are available to follow on @MrLambDHS, @MrCraigBusEd and @MissRalston_DHS.
Visits to local businesses as well as in-school visits from businesses take place in order to enhance pupils’ learning experiences. As a department, we are always keen to develop further business links – if you feel that you can offer your time, please get in touch with Steven Lamb (PT Enterprise) to discuss further.
